We have seventeen goals for the planet. After two years on the frontline of AI, I’ve become convinced we’re missing the eighteenth — and it’s the one the machines are forcing us to name. It’s changed our mission, so I want to share the short version here and point you to where I’ve written it in full.

A promise — now with one more goal

Innovation360 began with a promise: by 2030, solve at least one of Singularity University’s grand challenges with technology from our world. In 2015 we raised it to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Today we raise it once more.

Our mission: by 2030, at least one of the 17+1 Global Goals — the seventeen, plus Being Human — solved with technology from Innovation360 and our ecosystem.

Where the +1 came from

The 17 goals worked because someone made them speakable — Jakob Trollbäck, the designer behind their icons and color wheel. At Expo 2020 Dubai I joined the Blue Marble Vision panel, and during Space Week — led by space designer Cecilia Hertz — we worked with astronauts including Christer Fuglesang and Jessica Meir. Standing among them, one thought kept returning: we mapped the systems brilliantly — but did we map the human? Every one of the seventeen protects the conditions for human life and assumes a fixed point at the centre: the human being. The age of machines has un-fixed it. So I’m making the case for a SDG 18: Being Human — and we’ve crowd-solved Global Goals before (our Fix the Planet sprint with the UN reached 2,000+ people in 65 countries). Now let’s sprint the eighteenth SDG.
