For the first time, astronomers have found an atmosphere around an Earth-like rocky world in another star’s habitable zone. A strategist in the age of machines reads the discovery — and finds both a lesson in humility and one of humanity’s oldest questions.

I did not expect a haze of helium around a rock forty-eight light-years away to speak to my working life. I have spent decades on the frontline of industrial transformation, advising organizations on precisely the technologies now pulling the floor out from under us, and I have grown used to the genre: the breathless and the apocalyptic, the consultant’s deck and the doom-monger’s thread. So when I read that a team at Harvard and the Smithsonian had detected, for the first time, an atmosphere around an Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of another star, I read it the way I read most things in this landscape — braced for either naivety or alarm. I found neither. I found instead something I had not gone looking for: a question as old as faith, asked again by the most advanced instruments we have ever built.

The prediction came before the observation

What grips me about this discovery is not primarily what it found, but how it found it. A young researcher, Collin Cherubim, built a theoretical model predicting that the planet LHS 1140 b should have an upper atmosphere rich in helium, slowly bleeding into space. It was a mathematical result — nothing of the kind had ever been observed around a rocky planet. His own advisor, one of the world’s leading exoplanet astronomers, was initially skeptical for exactly that reason: it sounded like the product of a calculation rather than a description of the sky. Then the team pointed a spectrograph at the planet on a rare night when it and a sibling planet crossed their star together — an alignment that will not recur for at least half a century. One planet showed nothing. The other was leaking helium. The prediction held.

For anyone who works at the intersection of science and faith, this is a familiar pattern, and a beautiful one. It is how both traditions operate at their best: you begin with something you do not fully understand, you build an interpretive frame, you make a prediction you can actually test — and then you let reality say no, or yes. The physicist-priest John Polkinghorne called this critical realism: reality is out there, but our access to it is always interpreted, always incomplete, always open to correction. It is the same humble method, practiced in two rooms that my own industry assumes have nothing to say to each other.

The remarkable thing is not that the model was right. It is that someone dared to trust a calculation until the sky confirmed it.

The oldest question

The Center for Astrophysics organizes its work around a handful of large questions, and one of them is stated plainly: is there life beyond our solar system? It is worth pausing over how unusual it is for a question that un-ironic to be written into a research institution’s understanding of itself. Twenty years ago we wondered whether other Earth-like planets existed at all. Then we learned they are common. Then we found some in the habitable zone. Now we know that at least one of them has held on to an atmosphere for more than three billion years, under a red dwarf of the kind we assumed would strip its planets bare. Step by step, the question has migrated out of philosophy and into the observatory.

But it does not stop being a theological question merely because it has become a measurable one. Are we alone is not a technical problem with a technical solution; it is among the oldest questions human beings have asked, and the tradition wrestled with it long before we had telescopes. If life turns out to be common across the cosmos — what does that do to the claim that the human being is made in the image of God? If it does not, if every stone we examine turns out to be dead — what does that do to us? I have no tidy answer, and I distrust anyone who claims one. The point is not the answer but the posture: an atmosphere around a distant world is worth wonder, not as ammunition in a debate, but as a reminder that reality is larger than our models of it.

A lesson in humility for the age of machines

Here the discovery meets my actual occupation. We live in an age intoxicated by its own capacity to build — one that wants to storm heaven with intelligence of its own manufacture, abolish every limit, make a name for itself. That is Babel’s old temptation rendered in silicon: the dream of the unbounded self, of having more without thereby being more. And into that intoxication drifts a haze of helium around a rock we can never reach, doing something quietly subversive. It reminds us that what we did not build is infinitely larger than what we did.

There is a fine irony in the fact that machines helped us see it. The same institution is developing artificial intelligence to sift astronomy’s unmanageable data; the instruments behind this kind of discovery are technology’s children through and through. But notice what they were pointed at. Not inward, at a mirror of our own capability, but outward — at a sky that does not belong to us. Technology is never neutral; it takes on the characteristics of those who devise and direct it. Aimed at wonder, the telescope becomes something other than it is when aimed at dominance. Same glass, same mathematics. What differs is the disposition of the one holding it.

A machine can amplify our power or our wonder. The difference lies not in the tool, but in where we turn it.

Remaining human under a foreign sky

What moves me most, as someone temperamentally suspicious of both hype and despair, is that this kind of science demands exactly the posture I have tried to call orientation rather than alarm. You cannot indulge naive enthusiasm — we have found an atmosphere, not a neighbor; the helium was detected in 2024 and not in the following year’s observations, which is science being honest about its own edges. But neither can you retreat into unease, because then you miss the fact that something genuinely wonderful has just happened. The hard thing is to stand in between: awake, sober, still capable of awe. That is harder than either of the comfortable moods, because it asks us to act and to contemplate rather than simply to feel.

The question of whether we are alone in the universe became, this week, slightly less lonely. Not answered — slightly less lonely. And perhaps that is the right size for a step in a question of this kind: not an answer that closes, but an opening that deepens. Anyone who has built a life on the conviction that the human being is measurable, optimizable, and ultimately replaceable might pause before a sky that just became a little more inhabited by possibility. Because what makes us human is not that we are the most efficient thing in the room. It is that we can lift our eyes from the instruments and wonder.

Choose wonder. Build for the common good. And remain, against every pressure to be re-described as a machine, profoundly and unapologetically human — for that grandeur, turned toward a sky we did not manufacture, is something no machine can ever replace.
